The Nature of Morecambe Bay​

About Morecambe Bay and the Surrounding Areas

Morecambe Bay is a large bay in the northwest of England second only in size to The Wash.  It stretches from Walney Island in the northwest to The Fylde in the southeast and is made up of the combined estuaries of the rivers Leven, Kent, Keer, Lune and Wyre.  With Duddon Sands it forms the largest area of intertidal mudflats in the UK and is recognised internationally for its importance to migratory birds.

Biology : Flora and Fauna

The Bay is a vast area comprising many and varied habitats. The waters and muds of the Bay are rich with fish and invertebrates and these, in turn, support flocks of migratory wading bird species. The adjoining marshes of Leighton Moss are also important for waders and other rare birds, such as the bittern and bearded tit. Farmland, pastures, and remnants of temperate rainforest surround the bay and extend and support the diverse and internationally important habitats of the area.
